Botanical Fictions

Workshop

In a four-day workshop led by Isabel Seiffert and Christoph Miler from Offshore Studio, we took a closer look at the plants and fungi around us. Inspired by Donna Haraways' proposal to tell new stories of life (together), the world, the ecological future and future symbiotic relationships, the aim of the week was to invent new botanical species.

These should relate in the broadest sense to current events, technological developments and the human impact on the biosphere. The following questions took centre stage: How can a native species develop in a radically changed climate?

What symbioses can exist between the organic and inorganic material found in our forests? What stories can we tell about the possible course of human and Earth history based on this future archive?

Offshore Studio is a design studio based in Zurich and Eindhoven, founded by Isabel Seiffert and Christoph Miler. Their projects have a strong focus on editorial design, typography and storytelling. In addition to commissioned work and collaborations, Offshore Studio explores critical questions about design, media and globalisation in self-initiated projects.
